BRIDGE PROCEDURE
MASTER PILOT RELATIONSHIP

Good morning all of you, I’m so proud so many of you can make it today, and my pleasure to Mr.Wesley, well let’s we start our topic.

In every conditions,winter,waving,storming we as a deck officer have to do our obligation such watchkeeping .In several location officer in the vessel need some help from the pilot, and for this chance I would like to present Bridge Procedure for Master and Pilot.

My presentation is Based on the film that we saw last week and some from the internet.

In the bridge of the vessel, there is Bridge Team Management, they are the Master, Officer on Watch , helmsmen and pilot.The Master has to responsible about safety and the navigation in every condition and weather.In some condition the Master need some help from the Pilot, especially when the ship will berthing or enter the narrow channel.Because the pilot knows the culture , tides , hazard navigation and the traffic around, and also pilot has experience for the location, then he familiar with the language to the port and VTS in TSS.

When the Master require the pilot, the bridge team will call the pilot and do exchange information about position and call sign of the ship and the ETA, and we have to prepare the accomodation for the pilot,and prepare the pilot ladder, when the pilot come on board, the officer on watch will tell to bridge team by internal radio communication.The bridge team have to say helo or greating to the pilot and offering some coffee or tea, because it will make a good beginning.Then the pilot have to fill the pilot card it is about the ship’s characteristic and dimensions.Then the pilot will work together in the bridge.

When the Pilot come on board , the master still hold fully of responsible of the ship.
The master have to be honest to the pilot,if there any problem with the ship. Such the bow can’t work properly, the RADAR is error or the rudder is broken, don’t let Pilot find out, so the pilot know what he has to do.

The master must agree to make the passage plan together with the pilot’s global knowledge and follow the instructions for safe navigation and share everything with the pilot.If there are some problem or dangerous , pilot have to discuss it with the master and if there’s any problem with the language the master should ask for the translation and also the officer on watch have to check the fixing position and be aware with naval situation around,Bridge team must be ready to take reaction.

If the ship going into the danger OOW have to tell the master immediately and discuss it to the pilot.the pilot needs to detail about the berthing procedure.
Both of the pilot or master have to respect and respons each other,and keep the relation.

A good master relationship will make a safe navigation, even the pilot present on board, it doesn’t release the master’s and officer on duty responsibility.
